Mayberry Bible Study: The Mayberry Bible Study is meeting on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m.

 

Confirmation Class: Confirmation Class for Youth ages 12 and up (must be 12 before Jan. 1, 2009) will be held during Sunday School (9:45 a.m.) on Feb. 10th, 17th, and 24th.  Please see the Pastor or call the church office to register.

 

Class on Christian Beliefs & United Methodism – Sunday, Jan. 27th, at 6:30 p.m.  The Pastor will lead a class on United Methodist Christian beliefs, church structure, United Methodist history and Hickory Church history on Sun., Jan. 27th, at 6:30 p.m.  All interested persons, including members and prospective members, are invited.  While not necessary, notifying the Pastor of your intention to attend will help make sure sufficient materials are available.  A nursery will be provided if you notify the Pastor.

 

2008 Offering Envelopes: Offering Envelopes are available in the Welcome Center.  Please call the church office if you do not find your envelopes or if you need additional envelopes for your family.

Hickory Seniors Meeting: Monday, Jan. 21st, 10:00 a.m.

 

Flower Chart: The new flower chart for 2008 has been posted.  Please take a moment to sign up for the Sunday of your choice.  Directions are posted at the top of the chart.  Thank you for helping the sanctuary look even more beautiful for worship.

 

Important Nursery Information: As required by the Book of Discipline, the nursery should be staffed by 2 people at all times regardless of the number of children.  We are recruiting volunteers to assist Rebecca in the nursery.  There is a need during the 11:00 service.  Volunteers are asked to serve quarterly.  Also, we would like to send out a friendly reminder that teenage & young adult volunteers must be pre-approved by the Staff Parish Comm.  We are extremely grateful for our volunteers; however, baby-sitting training and/or experience is preferred for our younger volunteers.  For more info. or to volunteer, please contact Amy Harris at 421-7381 or at tallencon@aol.com.

 

OPENING IN THE FALL...  AFTER SCHOOL DAYCARE CENTER @ HICKORY UMC:  Beginning this Sept., from 2:00-6:00 pm, our church will be offering an after school daycare program for children Kindergarten thru 5th grade.  This program will offer children in the area a safe, nurturing, and Christian environment where they will be offered snack, homework supervision, arts and crafts, and supervised play.  The program will be housed in the Fellowship Center.  For info. about the program, employment, or how to register your child, please contact any of the following members of the Board of Directors: Donna Mishler (469-0632), Carolyn Everton (406-1028), Jennifer Dudley (739-7963), Sabrina Leist (547-3373), Denise Monroe (421-9697), Debbie Marable (641-1513), Patty Hamilton (421-7159), Jennifer Foster (410-2836), or Tom Mercer (421-2777).

YOUTH

Next Meeting: Today we will have a special meeting from 12:30 to 3:30 pm.  During these three hours, we will be feeding our souls with power prayer, studying in Bible Study and fellowshipping together with food and fun.  Come and join us!  Our special event, Blackstone Retreat, will be the weekend of Jan. 25th – 28th.  Please see the January Calendar for all the details.

Next Meeting: Today, 5-6 pm.

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING: On Feb. 3rd, Super Bowl Sunday, the children at HUMC will be accepting donations of canned soups in their "Soup Pots" during worship services.  Our Communion Offering will also be designated to help fight hunger and poverty in our country.  God's Kids have chosen the food kitchen at Chesapeake Avenue UMC to receive the canned soups.  The Communion Offering will be divided between the Chesapeake Care Free Clinic and Chesapeake Health Investment Program (CHIP).  Our donations will be recorded online at the National Souper Bowl of Caring web site (www.souperbowlofcaring.com) with all the other nationwide participants.  Please join us on Feb. 3rd as we worship our Lord and continue our mission to fight hunger and poverty.
