75 & Over Luncheon: The 75 + Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, July 2nd, at Noon.  Invitations have been sent.  If you turned 75 in the past year or are already 75 and have not been invited in the past, please call the office (421-2778) and add your name to our list as we want to include everyone.

 

The Hickory United Methodist Men want to congratulate Wil Best as this year’s recipient of the HUMM College Scholarship.  He will be attending ODU this fall and will be taking courses towards a degree in Music Education.  Wil has also been chosen to be a "Plankowner" in ODU's marching band and has received a scholarship from ODU.  Congratulations Wil!    

 

It’s backpack time!  The 2008-2009 Backpacks of Love campaign is underway.  Empty backpacks with supply lists for grades K-5 are ready for you to pick up, shop & return filled with supplies & love.  The supply list has a checklist so you can mark off each item as you buy it.  Please return the supply list in the filled backpack and note if there is a missing item.  If you would like your contribution to be included in your annual tithing report, please attach your receipts and put your name at the bottom of the supply list.  Please return filled backpacks by July 20th.

 

Next Gospel Concert: The next Gospel Concert will be held on Saturday, July 12th, at 7:00 p.m.  It will feature “Fentress Creek Bluegrass Gospel”, Annie and Danny Crawford and “The Master’s Messengers”.  Refreshments will be available and a love offering will be collected.

 

NEWS FROM VBS: HUMC invites all children, preschool - 5th grade, to join us as we go on a trek for friendship and fun.  Activities involving camping will provide us with lots of opportunities to learn more about our friend, Jesus.  Friendship Trek will be held July 27 - August 1, (Sunday-Friday) from 5:15 - 8:30 pm.  Mark your calendars now for Friendship Trek this summer at Hickory Church!!  Youth and adults are asked to prayerfully consider the gifts that God has blessed each of you with, and how you may share these gifts with our children.  Call Jennifer Dudley or Sabrina Leist for more info.  Registration for VBS has begun and forms are available on the Children’s Table in the Welcome Center.  Sign ups for volunteers to help with VBS are located in this same area.

Vacation Bible School:  Friendship Trek…Jesus, Our Forever Friend:  Each night, “Backpack Snacks” will be given to the children.  We are asking for donations for the following supplies: Individual cups of vanilla and chocolate pudding, Teddy Graham Bear Crackers, Sugar Cookies, Fruit Roll Ups, Cheerios, Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, Vanilla Frosting, Individually Wrapped Rice Krispies treats, Pull-N-Peel Twizzlers, Candy Corn, Thin Pretzel Sticks, Raisins, Plain M & Ms, Regular Sized Ice Cream Cones (NOT sugar cones).  Thank You!

 

 

Swimming Lessons – In honor of Betty Campen, the annual Campen swimming lessons will be led by Tessa Darrow and 5 helpers, all competent former swimming students of Mrs. Campen.  Classes will be held for 2 weeks: July 21st through August 1st beginning at 9 a.m. at 532 Butterfly Drive, Ches., VA  23322 (Great Bridge).  Classes are free and open to everyone over 5 years old.  Contact Lynn Jordan at 421-4312 or Tessa Darrow at 436-0835 with questions.

 

 

Prayer Team: Our prayer team reminds you to fill out those “answered prayer cards” and help us fill up our jar to show how God is moving in our congregation.  The blue prayer request cards are to request prayer and can be placed in the box on the organ.  The gray answered prayer cards are for prayers that have been answered and can be placed in the jar on the piano.

 

 

 

HUMC AFTER SCHOOL DAYCARE PROGRAM: Beginning on September 2, 2008, Hickory United Methodist Church is offering an After School Day Care program.  On Monday – Friday from 2:00-6:00 pm, children in kindergarten (PM) through fifth grade will be provided a supervised and nurturing environment including opportunities for the following activities: snack, supervised homework and Accelerated Reading times, inside and outside play time, and more!!  Registration has begun!  Only 30 children will be enrolled!  Don't miss the opportunity to "stay and play" at HUMC After School Day Care!!  To make an appointment, call Donna Mishler @ 469-0632.  Children who register this month will receive a free T shirt in the fall.  For more information go to the Children's Ministry Table in the Welcome Center.

 

 

 

Adopt a Hero - HUMC will host a military dinner & adoption of service personnel this Thanks-giving.  We need families willing to open their homes to these heroes. If you are interested, please contact Lynn Sorey at 436-5694.
