Eastern Shore Ministry - Casa Esperanza - The Allison Jolly House of Hope

May 2nd - Food Drive for Casa Esperanza - Rice, beans, pasta, masa or maseca flour and other non-perishable items are needed to open Casa for the season.

May 8th - Day Mission Trip to Casa Esperanza - Church members will deliver food items then work at the mission to help Rev. Carmen Colonna prepare to help those served by Casa. If you are interested in going to the shore, please get in touch with Lynn Sorey at 672-6529.  

 

CHILDREN'S CHURCH VOLUNTEERS: We are currently in need of individuals willing to help out with our children's church ministry during the regular worship time on Sundays.  A short lesson/ art activity is provided for the volunteer to use with a small group of children for 30 minutes after the children's sermon.  Please prayerfully consider giving ½ hour of your time in a 3 month period to help with the ministry of our children at Hickory Church.  Contact Donna Mishler @ 421-7963.

 

The pastor is available in his office on Wednesday and Friday mornings subject to emergencies.  Please feel free to call the Pastor at any time on his cell phone (287-8420) or the church office (421-2778) and an appointment can be arranged.

 

 

BLUE BUCKET OF CHILDREN'S BOOKS: The Generation Why Not Sunday School Class is collecting Children's Books from toddler age all the way to high school age.  These books will be donated to needy families in the community through the local schools, food pantries and women's shelters.  Here is a staggering statistic: 61% of low-income families have no books at all in their homes for their children.  Please put all your new and gently used books in the Blue Bucket provided in the Welcome Foyer.  "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." — Frederick Douglass

 

Help train teachers in Yei, Southern Sudan: If you are an experienced educator (possibly retired), in good health, have energy and love for children and a desire for adventure, this is a wonderful opportunity to serve. Orientation to be held on Mon., Apr. 19, 7 pm at the District parsonage4113 N Witchduck Rd, Va Beach. Come meet with Lilly Klepp, founder of Harvesters Orphanage in Yei. If you are interested, please contact the District Office (473-1592) or Ellen Cummings at Baylake UMC (464-2423). (Date of the trip is not set, but will probably take place in Sept. 2010).

 

Diabetes Camp: The District 24D Lions are sponsoring a Family Diabetes Camp for children between the ages of 6 -18 years of age.  Camp will be held on April 30, May 1 & 2, 2010, at Triple R Ranch.  Kids with diabetes, type 1 or 2, can attend with a parent or guardian.  Cost is $150.00 per person.  The weekend is full of fun and information for kids with diabetes and their parents.  Scholarships are available for those in need.  For more information, call Sandy Carawan at 547-5479.

 

There is a collection box in the Welcome Center for donations of used glasses and hearing aids which will be collected by the Lions Club.  Also, Sandy Carawan is selling Lions Club brooms with all profits going to assist the blind.  If interested, please call Sandy at 547-5479.
